Do you have a spring in your step?

By: Julia Sanders.

Have you ever wondered why you feel oddly comfortable in your shoes, while walking miles with your friend and kinds, just wondering in Disney and having a good time? Did you feel like you had those special insoles that put a spring in your step? Well this strange phenomenon is called special asphalt!

Walt Disney wanted both old and young to feel good when walking huge distances in the Park. He made sure that not only the smell of the cotton candy stays with you but the comfiness of the pavement also! A group of scientist and chemist came up with a special mixture of asphalt and rubber! Resilient asphalt is a specific type of asphalt concrete that is used in sports fields and recreation areas to help reduce the aching of feet and joints from walking.  They add vulcanized rubber fibers and rubber latex to the mixture of asphalt to make it bouncier and easier to walk on, which makes you have more energy to enjoy the park. Sounds so cool doesn’t it?

It has been used at the 1939 New York World’s Fair and on Main Street, USA in Walt Disney World. The inventor of idea for this type of pavement is Walt Disney himself, and at the grand opening of Disneyland the park did have this special asphalt! Sadly it wasn’t a big success, because it was stickier than it was supposed to be. But you shouldn’t think that this let him down! He made sure that the mixture was perfect and that is why we can feel the comfortableness of Main Street, Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, Frontierland, Adventureland and others to this day!

Disney also uses color to help tell their story. For example, the ground in the Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland is painted a brownish-red to suggest the earth of the Wild West, while over in Tomorrowland, the concrete is painted gray, to hint at, well, um, concrete. Some even have LED lights installed in them, so that you can see some visual effects.

As you know there are some secret Mickeys hidden in animated films and videos, but this is not the only place. Some characters are hiding in the pavement itself!  So next time you are in Disneyland be sure to look down and spot some of your favorite animated characters!  Check back here to tell us how many you found and where so other guests and hunt for them also.
